PMNCH July's advocacy opportunities for women, children & adolescents

Global Health 50/50, a leading voice in promoting gender equality in global health, has again named PMNCH as a "very high performer" in its annual report on the policies and practices of global health organizations. The designation, awarded to PMNCH for the fourth straight year, recognizes PMNCH commitment to gender equality and women’s health advocacy, including for those most often left behind. At the Women Deliver 2023 conference that took place from 17-20 July in Kigali, Rwanda, PMNCH and partners advocated for the critical role of young people in shaping conversations on gender equality, health and well-being. PMNCH Board Chair, Helen Clark, shared how PMNCH is setting the tone by engaging young people in leadership positions and by coordinating the 1.8 Billion Young People for Change campaign. At the G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment, PMNCH Board Chair, Helen Clark, emphasized the importance of investing in girls' education, including comprehensive sexuality education, for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. In her speech she highlighted the multiple fold returns on investing in adolescent and youth populations, where 1.8 billion strong young people have great potential to contribute. The One Sustainable Health Forum took place in Lyon, France from July 5-7, 2023, gathering over 1000 high-level environmental, animal and human health stakeholders, fostering collaboration and redefining a global approach to health. PMNCH played a significant role in the Forum as an official partner and emphasized the importance of prioritizing women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health within the framework of a one sustainable health approach. PMNCH and partners highlight the 1.8 Billion Young People for Change Campaign and Global Forum for Adolescents in an article published by the Journal of Adolescent Health. Authors highlight that the forum and associated events will serve as a platform for adolescents and young people to demand action from political leaders, urging them to sustain and increase investment by governments and their partners to promote adolescent well-being through strengthened political commitment, policies and programmes.


HE Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Rt Hon. Helen Clark share their concern that the opportunity presented by the High-Level Meeting and the expected Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response is being squandered. They highlight that the current draft of the political declaration does not express the commitments required of Heads of State and Government to transform the international system of pandemic preparedness and response.

This year's World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), under its theme, “Let’s make breastfeeding at work, work”, UNICEF and WHO emphasized the need for greater breastfeeding support across all workplaces to sustain and improve progress on breastfeeding rates globally. In the last 10 years, many countries have made significant progress to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. Yet even greater progress is possible when breastfeeding is protected and supported, particularly in the workplace.

They play a crucial role in driving the 1.8 Billion Young People for Change campaign and Global Forum for Adolescents, which highlights the need for a green transition to ensure the well-being of current and future generations of adolescents.
